France is really the gateway to continental Europe for we Brits, so when you get across the channel then the whole of Europe is on your doorstop, and the only decision you have to make is whether to hire your motorhome here in the uk and travel across the channel with it, or hire it in France and save on the ferry crossing.

Personally, I am a committed Francophile, having been there many, many times between the age of 18 to 63 as I am now, but sadly I have never had the time to do the hire thing and pick up a motorhome or campervan to just tour round the country for a couple of months.

France has several micro climates, mountains to climb of ski on, lakes for swimming, fishing and boating and masses of coastline which the French themselves visit as often as possible for camping hols or just days out.

But if you are self sufficient, as you would be in a motorhome, you can just pop here and there at will, pick up some history in the larger towns and cities, some beach time down the western and southern coast, or go inland to the Ardeche region and try your hand at white water canoeing.

If you like surfing then the west coast offers what is probably the best in Europe, and the further south you go the better it becomes, until you reach the area around Biarritz and St Jean de Luz near the Spanish border where 5 metre surf is commonplace and 12 metres happens on a regular basis. Fancy riding a 12 metre wave? That's 39 feet or near enough and about the height of the average house!
