Poland is a country which, over the centuries has been overrun so many, many times by marauders and subjected to their foreign rule, so one could say that the Polish nation has endured more than most. Probably the national love for their beloved Vodka has helped to keep their spirits high (no pun intended), and they are now rushing to make their mark in the 21st century.

I may be wrong here but methinks that Poland is a country best visited in the spring or summertime as autumn and winter can be a tad chilly by our standards. Nevertheless, it is a beautiful country, especially if you are lucky enough to be able to drive around it with a high degree of comfort in the campervan or motorhome which you hire for the occasion.

Poland shares borders to the east with Russia (the Russian Federation), Belarus, Ukraine, Lithuania and the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, to the south with the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic and to the west with Germany. To the north lies the clear Baltic Sea, and the Baltic coast provides over 500km or about 300 miles of sandy beaches, bays, steep cliffs and dunes.

Northern Poland is made up of a mass of lakes, islands and wooded hills, a great many rivers and canals, whilst the Malsurian Lake District to the northeast is a patchwork of lakes and forests with Lake Hancza, the deepest lake in Poland, located here. The River Vistula (pronounced Wisla) has cut a wide valley from Gdansk on the Baltic coast to Warsaw in the heart of the country.

The rest of the country gins height slowly to the Sudety Mountains which run along the border with the Czech Republic, and the Tatra mountains, which separate Poland from the Slovak Republic. To the west, the River Oder forms the northwest border with Germany.
